Durban M4 crash: Medics confirm injury stats and death toll

Just after 11:00, on Tuesday, ALS Paramedics responded to a severe crash on the M4 Northern Freeway Durban bound, just after the Blue Lagoon off-ramp.

The scene was chaotic, with two vehicles involved in a rear-end collision resulting in multiple injuries.

Paramedics arrived swiftly and assessed the situation, discovering that eight people had sustained various injuries.

Among the victims was a woman in her thirties who was nine months pregnant.

She was found in critical condition and soon went into cardiac arrest on the scene.

Despite the paramedics’ efforts to resuscitate her and the rapid transport to a nearby hospital where a gynaecologist was waiting, both the mother and her unborn baby tragically passed away due to the severity of their injuries.

The remaining seven patients, including three children, were stabilised at the scene by the paramedics.

They were then transported to various hospitals in Durban for further medical care.

The injuries varied in severity, but prompt medical intervention ensured that all surviving patients received the necessary treatment.

The exact cause of the collision remains unclear at this stage.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) was present at the scene and has launched an investigation to determine the events leading up to the crash.

Authorities will be examining factors such as the speed of the vehicles, the condition of the drivers, and any potential road hazards that might have contributed to the accident.
