Dry Ice is nothing more than the solid form of carbon dioxide and while it is best used as a cooling agent, its unique properties make it useful in other applications as well including fog machines, for dramatic effects, and so on. Because of its wide range of applications, there are several suppliers in South Africa that offer dry ice for sale.
However, while it is widely used, incorrect usage can lead to injuries and damages. Prolonged exposure can cause skin damage and fog can cause hypercapnia, which refers to elevated carbon dioxide levels in the blood. For this reason, the following mistakes must be avoided when handling and using dry ice.
Incorrectly disposing of Dry Ice after use
Once dry ice has been used for a certain purpose, such as decoration or dramatic effects, it cannot be thrown into the sink to melt, or onto the ground. Dry ice does not melt, and it can cause serious damage to the sink, drains, plants and anything that it comes in contact with. Dry ice cannot be thrown in the trash either because it is not a well- ventilated space, causing the gas to build up in the trash bag and/or bin, which could lead to it exploding.
Leftover dry ice must be left in a well-ventilated area and warm water can be poured over it to speed up the process.
Not handling dry ice with protection
Dry ice can lead to frostbite when exposed to bare skin. Heavy-duty gloves, tongs, or both, can be used when handling dry ice. When it is used in drinks, people must be reminded that dry ice is not consumable. Because dry ice is heavier than the liquid, it will typically sit at the bottom of the glass, but people should be aware of the risks of exposure.
Storing Dry Ice in a closed container
Dry Ice sublimates, which means that carbon dioxide gas is released, this can lead to the container expanding and potentially exploding. Dry Ice must be kept in a well-ventilated container where it can sublimate safely.
Ingesting Dry Ice
The temperature of dry ice when it is manufactured is -78.5 degrees Celsius and ingesting even a small piece of dry ice can cause severe internal burns.
Always practice precaution when using dry ice and do not let children or pets near it. If dry ice is used to create special effects with drinks, ensure that the dry ice has sublimated completely before the drink is ingested.
Buying it in advance before you need it
When you plan an event where you plan on using dry ice for special effects or you have a specific purpose in mind such as dry ice blasting, do not purchase the dry ice days in advance. Two kilograms of dry ice can completely sublimate within 24 hours, even when it is stored in a cold environment. Plan to buy dry ice the morning of the event or before you need to use it.
Buying it ahead of time also makes it difficult to safely store and handle it, and it increases the risk of
accidental exposure, especially for use with special events at home.
