Eskom power update for the week starting Monday, 23 December 2024

Loadshedding remains highly unlikely this week as Eskom’s Energy Availability Factor (EAF) averaged 57.4% over the past week and 62.54% year-to-date.

Eskom has maintained 271 consecutive days without loadshedding, leveraging its Generation Recovery Plan and utilising the December summer break to increase maintenance activities.

Eskom power update for this week: Here’s what you must know

Diesel savings have reached R16.06 billion, representing a 65.4% reduction compared to last year’s R24.57 billion expenditure.

Over the past week, unplanned outages averaged 11,668MW, down from 12,312MW during the same period last year. Ongoing maintenance has increased to 8,640MW, aligning with efforts to improve reliability for winter 2025.

Kusile Unit 6 commissioning continues, marking a significant step toward adding 800MW to the grid.

What is the likelihood of loadshedding?

Loadshedding remains highly unlikely this week as Eskom’s Energy Availability Factor (EAF) averaged 57.4% over the past week and 62.54% year-to-date.

With top-performing stations, including Camden and Majuba, achieving EAFs of 70% and above, Eskom has adequate capacity to meet demand.

With an available generation capacity of 28,197MW and a forecasted peak demand of 23,956MW for tonight, the system remains stable.

By Tuesday evening, an additional 2,950MW is expected to return to service, ensuring ample supply for the festive season.
