Eskom power update for the week starting Monday, 16 December 2024

With a peak demand forecast of 25,830MW and an available generation capacity of 27,929MW for this week, Eskom is well-equipped to meet electricity needs.

Eskom has achieved a record 264 consecutive days without loadshedding, thanks to the successful implementation of the Generation Recovery Plan.

Eskom power update for this week: Here’s what you must know

This milestone has resulted in diesel savings of R16.46 billion, representing a 67.7% reduction compared to the R24.32 billion spent during the same period last year.

Over the past week, unplanned outages averaged 12,499MW, a decrease from the 13,827MW recorded during the same period last year. Planned maintenance activities increased to 7,619MW, aligning with Eskom’s strategy to prepare for winter 2025.

Despite a recent incident at Matla Power Station, Eskom confirmed there is no evidence of sabotage, and repairs are underway

What is the likelihood of loadshedding?

Loadshedding remains unlikely this week as Eskom’s Energy Availability Factor (EAF) averaged 57.6% over the past week and 62.7% year-to-date.

Top-performing stations such as Camden, Majuba, and Medupi have achieved EAFs of 70% or higher.

With an available generation capacity of 27,369MW and a forecasted peak demand of 23,967MW for tonight, Eskom is well-positioned to meet electricity needs.

By Tuesday evening, an additional 4,020MW is expected to return to service, further boosting grid stability.
