Taylor Swift teases new snippet in Episode 9 of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

Taylor Swift’s rerecorded version of 'Look What You Made Me Do' made a surprise debut in the latest episode of 'The Handmaid’s Tale', sparking fan speculation.

Fans of Taylor Swift were given a surprise in the wee hours of this morning (late last night in the US), when a new snippet of Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version) debuted in Episode 9 of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6.

Taylor Swift teases ‘Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version)’

The song, part of Swift’s re-recording campaign, features updated vocals and production, offering a more mature sound compared to the original 2017 hit.

The new version opened the penultimate episode titled Execution, where the series’ main character, June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss), leads a rebellion against Gilead’s commanders.

The track plays over a powerful scene showing handmaids walking together as explosions erupt. Moss, who is also an executive producer on the show, said in a statement to Billboard:

“There could not be a more perfect song for a more perfect moment.”

Originally released as the lead single of her Reputation album, Look What You Made Me Do marked a sharp turn in Swift’s image.

It was her response to public feuds and media backlash at the time. Now re-recorded, it maintains the song’s original edge but with refined vocals and a deeper emotional resonance.

Fans—known as Swifties—are speculating that more information could come at the upcoming American Music Awards on Monday, 26 May 2025.

What you must know about ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

The Handmaid’s Tale, based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel, depicts a dystopian society where women, especially those who can bear children, are stripped of their rights.

Now in its sixth and final season, the series has drawn critical acclaim for its unflinching portrayal of oppression, resistance, and survival.

Episode 9, Execution, sees a significant turning point. Joseph Lawrence, one of Gilead’s architects, sacrifices himself and fellow commanders by orchestrating an explosive act of rebellion.

His death, alongside Nick Blaine’s, marks a shift in the series’ tone—showing that not everyone survives in this violent regime.

The episode’s emotional weight is amplified by Swift’s music, with the lyrics—“I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time”—perfectly echoing June’s resilience.

With just one episode left in the series, fans can expect a dramatic conclusion in the last episode, which airs on Hulu on Tuesday, 27 May 2025.
