Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for Titan: The OceanGate Disaster, a documentary that takes a deep dive into the fatal 2023 implosion of the Titan submersible during its expedition to the Titanic wreck site.
The film traces the origins of OceanGate’s high-risk venture, focusing on its founder Stockton Rush, and the events that led to a tragedy that shocked the world.
What to expect from the ‘OceanGate’ documentary
Directed by Mark Monroe, the documentary covers the years of development and ambition behind the Titan sub, marketed as a revolutionary vehicle to democratise deep-sea exploration.
Viewers are given access to audio recordings, internal footage, and testimony from individuals with direct knowledge of the company’s operations.
It examines the technical and ethical decisions made in pursuit of Rush’s vision, as well as the moment-by-moment developments of the doomed dive.
The film also attempts to contextualise the global media reaction, drawing comparisons to the Titanic disaster itself, and raises questions about accountability in commercial exploration.
Will David Lochridge be included in the doc?
The film includes the story of David Lochridge, OceanGate’s former Director of Marine Operations. Lochridge had raised multiple safety concerns years before the disaster, warning that the Titan submersible’s carbon fibre hull was not adequately tested and that its viewport was not certified for the depths it was expected to reach.
His criticisms were documented in a formal inspection report and included warnings about OceanGate’s reliance on an acoustic monitoring system that could only detect structural failure moments before an implosion.
Lochridge was later dismissed from his role after urging the company to conduct further testing and seek independent certification.
When is Netflix ‘OceanGate’ documentary release date?
Titan: The OceanGate Disaster will premiere on 11 June 2025, on Netflix.
