Durban July 2025: Theme, what to expect, roads you must avoid

Durban July 2025 is set for Saturday with cultural showcases and major traffic adjustments expected near Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse.

Durban is preparing for the return of the Hollywoodbets Durban July this Saturday, 6 July 2025. The event, South Africa’s largest horseracing and fashion gathering, will be held at the Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse.

Durban July 2025: Here’s the theme for this year

This year’s theme is Marvels of Mzansi, focusing on celebrating the diversity, creativity, and cultural richness of South Africa.

According to eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba, the event continues to contribute to Durban’s economic and infrastructural development.

While the theme suggests a colourful and festive atmosphere, the event remains primarily centred around horseracing, with significant attention on fashion and hospitality tents.

What to expect from this year’s marquee horseracing event

Tens of thousands are expected to gather at the venue for what organisers call “Africa’s greatest racing, fashion and entertainment extravaganza.”

The main race carries a prize of R5 million and is rated as a Grade 1 event, the highest level in South African horseracing.

Tickets to attend the event cost R230, while parking on the golf course will require a separate ticket priced at R170. These must be purchased in advance or paid via card on raceday. No cash payments will be accepted.

Hospitality packages are also available, though attendees must confirm that these include general entrance or buy an entrance ticket separately.

On the day, entertainment and betting services will be available on-site, with betting counters already open from Monday, 1 July.

Durban July 2025: Roads you must avoid

Although no official road closures have been confirmed for this year, based on last year’s traffic plan and the venue remaining unchanged, significant disruptions are expected.

Motorists in Durban, particularly around the Greyville area, should prepare for roadblocks, redirected traffic, and heavy law enforcement presence.

According to last year’s layout:

  • DLI Avenue will be the main access point for golf course parking.
  • Avondale Road between Gladys Mazibuko and Haden Road will likely be closed, with only authorised vehicles permitted.
  • Motorists are advised to approach the venue via Florida RoadLilian Ngoyi Road (Windermere), or Berea Road, then enter through First Avenue into Gladys Manzi Road.
  • Parking zones are split into Red Dot and Blue Dot areas, with access regulated at checkpoints on DLI Avenue.

A large number of law enforcement officers will be stationed around the venue to ensure compliance with traffic regulations. Vehicles parked illegally may be towed.

Important reminders for racegoers

  • No liquor, cooler bags, or any liquid refreshments are allowed to be brought onto the premises.
  • E-hailing and taxi drop-offs are permitted in designated areas.
  • All members in a vehicle must have individual entrance tickets if parking in designated lots.

Attendees are urged to secure their tickets and plan their routes in advance to avoid delays.
