Dramatic scenes were witnessed at Phoenix Plaza, in Durban, on Monday afternoon.

Early reports coming from the scene of the violence suggest that two groups of armed males targeted two jewellery stores inside the shopping centre situated north of Durban.
It’s believed multiple shots were fired in the midst of the ordeal. However, at this stage, it’s unclear if any victims were struck.

Police update on jewellery store robberies
Details around the incidents were still murky at the time of this article’s publishing. However, as indicated in a statement released by private security firm Reaction Unit South Africa, police are in search of at least eight suspects believed to be involved in the double heist.
Moreover, Durban police are yet to come forward with information on the suspects’ search but at this time, no arrests have been announced.
According to RUSA, the suspects involved in the Phoenix Plaza jewellery heist fled in a white VW Polo and an A Class Mercedes-Benz with NUR registration plates.
The stores taken down were Mayuris Jewellers and Sterns.
“It was established that the suspects robbed Mayuris Jewellers and Sterns. An employee from one of the stores was allegedly injured after being assaulted. The robbers fired multiple shots as they made their way towards the exit.
“Several 9mm and rifle cartridges were recovered at the scene,” RUSA noted.
