The spine-chilling moment an informal trader sighed his last breath after being shot inside Siyaya Cash and Carry, a supermarket in Pietermaritzburg, KZN, was caught on camera.

Tensions were palpable at the Pietermaritzburg transit district on Thursday, after an armed security guard from the Cash and Carry supermarket fatally wounded a customer.

In a statement released to Times Live, police spokesperson colonel Nqobile Gwala confirmed the incident took place at approximately 07:30 inside the wholesale outlet.

The victim, a 30-year-old informal trader, was preparing for a busy day at Siyaya Taxi Rank and, according to police, had gone to restock on his cold drinks when the incident happened.

The motive behind the shooting remains unknown, at this juncture, but from reports, it’s believed the informal trader was gunned down over a till slip dispute.

The shooter, a 51-year-old man believed to be a foreign national, was arrested and his firearm seized for further examination.

News of the victim’s death spread quickly and within moments, the area was flooded with angry residents ready to pounce on the supermarket.

Tensions were so high, police had to enlist the help of private security to secure a parameter around the supermarket and prevent threats of looting.

Details on the victim’s identity are still unknown at this time.

The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
