Likhona Fose murder suspect makes first court appearance
Mduduzi Trevor Mnisi, a 39-year-old with a known criminal record, faces charges of premeditated murder in a case that has shaken the Roodepoort community.
Likhona Fose had been missing since Saturday. Her body was discovered the next day in an open field by a passerby, who immediately alerted police.
According to family members, her body showed injuries to her lower body and face, and her pants had been removed. These details point to possible sexual assault, though police have not yet confirmed the exact cause of death.
In court, Mnisi appeared calm and composed, showing little emotion as he entered the dock.
He was formally charged with the murder of Likhona Fose. The state has requested more time to prepare for a formal bail application hearing, which has now been set for 18 June 2025.
“We need the seven days to gather all necessary information so that we can strongly oppose bail,” a state representative said.
What we know about Mduduzi Mnisi
Mnisi’s background adds to the gravity of the case. Court documents revealed that he was previously convicted of attempted murder and robbery in 2007.
He had recently been released from prison, reportedly not more than three months ago, before being arrested in connection with Likhona’s death.
Outside the courtroom, community members staged a protest demanding justice. Many carried signs that read “Justice for Likhona Fose,” and voiced concerns about safety in their neighbourhoods. Some protesters said they fear for their children and feel that justice must be served swiftly.
According to Likhona’s family, she was last seen with a group of boys from a nearby area known as Phase 4.
Her disappearance prompted an immediate neighbourhood search. The family received heartbreaking confirmation of her death through a local WhatsApp group that circulated the discovery of the body.
Eastern Cape-born Likhona was being raised by her grandmother, who is now devastated by the loss.
Meanwhile, police investigations are continuing. The prosecution has made it clear they will oppose any attempt by Mnisi to be released on bail, citing the serious nature of the crime and his previous convictions.
