Senzo Meyiwa trial: Testimonies, live stream on Monday, 26 May 2025

The Senzo Meyiwa trial resumes today with a new state witness expected to testify, while previous testimony is on hold pending key data requests from the defence.

The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial resumes today, Monday, 26 May 2025, in the High Court in Pretoria, with a new witness expected to take the stand.

What to expect from the Senzo Meyiwa trial today

This comes after the court paused the cross-examination of lead investigator Brigadier Bongani Gininda on Friday due to outstanding evidence requested by the defence.

Advocate Charles Mnisi, representing accused number one, Muzi Sibiya, told the court he could not proceed with questioning Gininda until he received car tracker information for all police vehicles used during the arrest of his client.

This Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) data is considered crucial for verifying the movements and involvement of officers during the arrest operation.

Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng ordered that the State make this information available. Until then, Gininda’s testimony will remain on hold. The data in question is expected to clarify which vehicles were used, where they travelled, and who was in them during the arrest of Sibiya—a point that Mnisi argues is vital for his defence strategy.

In the meantime, the State will call a new witness from the Legal Practice Council. While details of this witness’s expected testimony were not disclosed in court, the shift to a new witness suggests the State is maintaining the trial’s momentum while resolving the issue raised by the defence.

Additionally, Mnisi informed the court that he intends to bring back two State witnesses for further questioning. One of them is Constable Sizwe Zungu, the key witness who previously testified that he saw all five accused in Vosloorus on the day of Meyiwa’s murder in October 2014.

Mnisi’s application to recall witnesses will also be discussed in court today, as instructed by Judge Mokgoatlheng.

This new phase of the trial marks a transition from the testimony of Gininda, who had provided detailed responses about the investigation, including claims of communication between singer Kelly Khumalo and accused number five, Fisokuhle Ntuli.

Those statements had sparked further debate about who else might be connected to the incident, but the court has now temporarily shifted focus.
