A Cape Town father was shot dead at his son’s funeral in Ravensmead, sparking fears of further gang violence.

A Cape Town father was shot and killed at his son’s funeral in Ravensmead on Saturday morning, in what police believe to be a gang-related attack.

Ravensmead reeling from brutal murder at funeral

Moments after the shooting, the alleged gunman was beaten to death by enraged community members. The incident, which took place at Beverly Court, has heightened tensions in the area, with fears of escalating violence.

The father, whose name has not yet been released, was attending the funeral of his 26-year-old son, known as Bruimpie, who was murdered just days earlier.

Witnesses say two armed men approached the 54-year-old and fired multiple shots, striking him fatally.

A community member who witnessed the incident told IOL News: “One of them went back to make sure that the father was dead, and that is when he was caught by the community members.”

“He was beaten with stanchion steel posts and also pelted with slabs. The community is fed up with the nonsense that is happening in the area.”

The suspected shooter, identified as a 26-year-old man, was reportedly out on bail for a separate murder case.

As part of his bail conditions, he was ordered to reside outside of Ravensmead, but he was seen returning to the area in recent days.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that two separate murder cases have been opened and are under investigation.

“A 54-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded by a 26-year-old man. The alleged shooter was beaten to death at the scene of the incident. The motive is believed to be gang-related,” Van Wyk said.

According to reports, the suspect shot the father in the back of the head before attempting to flee. However, mourners at the funeral chased him down and killed him on the spot.

Authorities have urged the public to come forward with any relevant information.

While the police have launched investigations into both killings, the fear of retaliation looms over the community.
