Ogopoleng Modise, a 37-year-old Comrades marathon runner, was brutally stabbed to death during his routine jog on Saturday, 6 July 2024.
Comrades runner killed while on a jog
His body was discovered on Sunday, 7 July 2024, along the pathway leading from La Verna to town.
According to the police, Modise went for a jog on Saturday morning but did not return home, prompting friends and family to search for him throughout the day.
It was reported that Modise took the pathway leading from La Verna hospital, where he was accosted by unknown suspects and stabbed.
A case of murder is being investigated, and the police are appealing for any information that could lead to the apprehension of the suspects.
The running community is devastated by the loss. A member told the Ladysmith Herald:
“This is indeed a sad day for all who knew Ogopoleng Modise.”
Who was Ogopoleng Modise?
Ogopoleng Modise was a well-known figure in the running fraternity, having completed his eighth Comrades marathon this year.
Beyond his achievements in athletics, Modise was a respected Civil Engineering Technologist at iX Engineers (Pty) Ltd.
Modise had a demonstrated history of working in the transportation and municipal services industry.
He was skilled in AutoCAD, highways, construction, drainage, and contract management.
Modise was a strong engineering professional with a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) in Transportation Engineering from Tshwane University of Technology.
