The body of 14-year-old Likhona Fose, who had been reported missing, was discovered in an open field in Roodepoort, west of Johannesburg, on Sunday evening.
Likhona Fose murder: Here is what we know so far
The discovery was made by a passerby who alerted local authorities.
Likhona was last seen on Saturday afternoon. Her family became concerned when she did not return home and began searching the neighbourhood. They were informed by local children that she had been seen with a group of boys from a nearby area known as Phase 4.
Despite following leads, the family was unable to locate her.
Their worst fears were confirmed when they received a message from a community WhatsApp group about a body found in a field.

Upon identification, family members noted that Likhona’s pants were removed and she had visible injuries on her lower body and face.
While the exact cause of death has not been confirmed, these observations have raised concerns about possible sexual assault.
A formal statement from the police is awaited to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding her death.
The discovery of Likhona’s body has left the community in shock and mourning. Her grandmother, who raised her, is reportedly devastated by the loss. The family is seeking justice and urging anyone with information to come forward.
Likhona’s death comes shortly after the murder of 30-year-old Olorato Mongale in Johannesburg. Mongale was last seen getting into a car with a man she met online; her body was found hours later.
Police investigations revealed that the suspect, Philangenkosi Makhanya, was part of a syndicate targeting women.
Makhanya was killed in a shootout with police. Police Minister Senzo Mchunu confirmed that a second suspect has since handed himself over to authorities, with a third suspect is still at large.
Authorities have linked the syndicate to multiple cases involving the abduction and assault of women.
