Gauteng police arrest four suspects in high-stakes operation

Four suspects have been arrested following a coordinated multi-agency operation involving multiple law enforcement units, including the JMPD Tactical Response/K9 Unit, SAPS Anti-Kidnapping Task Team, and others.

The operation began on Wednesday, 16 April, in Leondale and continued into Thursday, 17 April, in Lawley, south of Johannesburg.

Police said the suspects were tracked through investigative work and crucial leads. At one location in Leondale, two suspects were arrested. Officers also recovered several firearms including an AK47, R5 rifle, two pistols — one hidden inside a refrigerator — and a Toyota Rumion confirmed to have been used during the murder of Officer Mbambo.

A third suspect, believed to be the gunman seen in CCTV footage from the day of the attack, was apprehended at a second location in Leondale. He was found with a pistol believed to be the murder weapon and was also in possession of a hijacked Toyota Urban Cruiser.

Acting on the third suspect’s confession, officers continued the search at Lawley Station Informal Settlement where they arrested a fourth individual and recovered Officer Mbambo’s stolen service firearm. The gun’s serial number had been filed off, indicating attempts to conceal its origin. Police also discovered a hijacked Volkswagen Polo Vivo on the same property.

Commissioner Patrick Jaca, JMPD Chief of Police, hailed the operation as a “testament to the dedication, bravery, and collaborative spirit” of all involved, adding that the breakthrough reflects the department’s determination to seek justice for their fallen colleague.
