Diepkloof protests: Looting, road closures and two confirmed deaths – Here’s the latest

Two people have died and major highways are closed as violent protests erupt in Diepkloof, Soweto over land, water, and sanitation grievances.

Protests erupted in Diepkloof, Soweto, early on Monday morning, 19 May 2025, as hostel residents took to the streets demanding access to basic services and the return of what they claim is “sold” land.

What is happening in Diepkloof?

The demonstrations have turned violent, resulting in the confirmed deaths of two individuals and the looting of at least one truck.

The protestors, mostly from the Diepkloof Hostel, say they have endured long-standing issues with water, sanitation, and housing. Some residents allege that their homes have been demolished, prompting them to escalate their frustrations.

Police confirmed the two fatalities occurred during the housing protest on Monday morning. A visibly distressed crowd surrounded one of the scenes, where a blood-soaked letter lay next to a covered body. Another person is currently hospitalised.

Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Sasondo stated:

“We brought two people who are confirmed deceased and one person who is in hospital. The situation is volatile and investigations are underway.”

Violence has included looting and the torching of at least one truck.

Surveillance footage captured at 04:29 shows a group of individuals ransacking trucks at the N12 interchange. In one instance, a truck carrying canned fish was looted after trying to force its way through barricaded roads.

The demonstration is not the first of its kind in the area.

Diepkloof hostel dwellers have previously taken to the streets over the same service delivery issues.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has warned motorists to steer clear of the Diepkloof Interchange, where roads have been closed due to ongoing unrest.

“The JMPD is attending to reports of protests, and there are further reports of truck looting.

Motorists are strongly advised to avoid the Diepkloof Interchange completely,” JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said.

Affected routes include:

  • N12 Eastbound and Westbound at the N1 split
  • N1 Northbound and Southbound at the N12 split

Fihla recommended alternative routes such as Rand Show Road and the Golden Highway, but cautioned that these areas may also experience heavy traffic due to diversions.

As law enforcement, including nyalas, drones, and reinforcements, try to stabilise the area, the situation remains fluid and potentially dangerous. Motorists and residents are urged to remain vigilant and avoid the protest zone.
