The case against six suspects, including two police officers and two Gauteng Traffic Police inspectors, has been postponed to Friday, 28 March 2025 for a bail hearing.
Ekurhuleni cops involved in G4S attempted robbery remain in custody: Here’s the latest
The accused appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 25 March 2025, facing multiple charges related to the attempted robbery of a G4S security truck.
Among those in the dock were Constables T. Nkosi and Z.P. Dlamini, who are attached to Ekurhuleni TRIO VISPOL, along with Gauteng Traffic Provincial Inspectors Kgomotso Makhene and Johnny Stoltz.
They were joined by two civilians, Edward Setati and Cornelius Masoka.
The group faces charges including kidnapping, robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms, and the use of signal-jamming devices.
The arrests follow an intelligence-driven operation targeting a syndicate involved in blue light robberies. Authorities linked the suspects to at least two cases of truck hijackings and carjackings in Kempton Park.
What the CCTV footage shows
A widely circulated CCTV video of the attempted robbery has provided crucial evidence in the case.
The footage shows two Gauteng Traffic Police officers stopping a G4S security truck while a SAPS officer stands in the background holding a firearm.
The video has sparked public concern about law enforcement’s involvement in organised crime.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the breakthrough in the investigation came after law enforcement officers were summoned for questioning.
During the interviews, crucial information led detectives to two additional civilian suspects.
A follow-up operation resulted in the seizure of three firearms and signal-jamming devices, tools commonly used in cash-in-transit and truck hijackings.
Following the arrests, Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni expressed his disappointment, calling out corrupt officers who collaborate with criminals.
“It is disheartening to see those who are expected to enforce and uphold the law working with criminals to terrorise our communities. This arrest should send a strong message to those few rotten potatoes within the service that the arm of the law is too long, and we will surely catch up with them,” he said.
Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and further arrests may follow. The suspects remain in custody until their bail hearing on Friday, 28 March 2025.
