An off-duty police officer was shot and killed in broad daylight, along Bulwer Road, Berea, on Wednesday.
Bulwer Road murder: Nightmare hijacking ends in death
A section of the busy road was cordoned off for South African police to process the scene of a hijacking that went horribly wrong.
Details around the incident are sketchy, at this time, but according to anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee, an off-duty police officer met his tragic end in a fiery encounter with armed gunmen.
Berea authorities have yet to issue a formal statement with more information. However, it’s believed the off-duty officer responded to an all-points bulletin about an ongoing hijacking on Bulwer Road.
The officer may have been close to the scene of the action and so, perhaps driven by instinct, he responded and engaged with the hijackers in gunfire, without backup.
Unfortunately, the off-duty cop was overpowered by the hijackers’ arsenal and he was fatally wounded.
The armed robbers, it’s believed, ditched the stolen car after colliding into oncoming traffic, and hijacked another vehicle nearby before speeding away.
Abramjee released these pictures of the murder scene on Bulwer Road.
