Scores of protesters descended on Muizenberg’s beachfront on Sunday, to air out their grievances in what was part of a global anti-vax picket led under the Worldwide Rally for Freedom banner.

The 300-some protesters held placards with anti-establishment rhetoric and wild conspiracies about the COVID-19 global vaccination campaign. From what we understand, about 50 public order police had been deployed to the region, possibly briefed on the day’s activities.

According to police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi, things got tense when a number of anti-vax protesters were warned about not wearing a face mask in public.

Not heeding the police’s warnings, the protesters continued defying lockdown laws by gathering without masks, and not observing social distancing.

Swartbooi confirmed that this resulted in clashes, where nine protesters were arrested, six of whom were charged with flouting Disaster Management Act regulations.

“Once charged, they are expected to make a court appearance in the Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court on a charge of failure to comply with the instruction of the Disaster Management Act, to wear a mask in public,” he said.
