Access to key areas of Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) will be limited this weekend, with Oudekraal and Newlands picnic sites closed on Sunday, SANParks confirmed.
SANParks confirms several area closures ahead of Cape Town Cycle Tour
This is due to the annual Cape Town Cycle Tour, which will see thousands of cyclists take to the city’s roads, prompting widespread road closures and restricted entry to certain sites.
In a statement, Table Mountain National Park management said that while some areas, such as Boulders Penguin Colony and Cape Point, will remain open, visitors will only be allowed access after 14:00 on Sunday, 9 March 2025, once roadblocks have been lifted.
What to know about road closures and access restrictions

The Cape Town Cycle Tour, set for Sunday, is expected to bring over 30,000 cyclists to the Western Cape.
In preparation for the event, authorities have announced major road closures that will impact traffic and access to various parts of TMNP.
Key site closures include:
- Oudekraal Picnic Site – closed all day on Sunday, 9 March 2025
- Newlands Picnic Site – closed all day on Sunday, 9 March 2025
- Cape Point and Boulders Penguin Colony – open but accessible only after 14:00
The City of Cape Town has also released a list of major road closures affecting areas from the CBD to False Bay.
Among the most critical shutdowns:
- Chapman’s Peak Drive – closed from 18:00 Saturday until 18:00 Sunday
- Nelson Mandela Boulevard (N2 outbound) – closed from 05:30 – 12:30 on Sunday
- M3 Freeway – closed from 05:30 – 12:30
- Victoria Road (Camps Bay) – closed from 07:00 – 18:00
- Main Road (False Bay to Cape Point) – closed from 05:45 – 14:00
To accommodate the thousands of participants and spectators, the MyCiTi bus service will operate shuttle routes between the CTICC and the race venue.
These services will run from 05:00 to 18:00 on race day.
The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, confirmed that Metro Police and Traffic Services would be deployed to ensure safety and assist with road management throughout the event.
